Matthew P. Bufis was appointed Director of Bands at Evanston Township High School in June of 2012. A native of New Jersey, he holds a Bachelor of Music in Music Education degree from Ithaca College in Ithaca, New York and a Master in Music Education degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. In addition to directing the ETHS Wind Symphony, Mr. Bufis oversees the concert band program, directs the Wildkit Marching Band and Pep Band, is an assistant within the jazz program, and is the instrumental sponsor for the YAMO pit orchestra – the musical accompaniment to a student written and directed theatre production at ETHS. Mr. Bufis also serves on the Evaluation and Joint Literacy committees at ETHS and is an active member in the Illinois Music Educator’s Association Evaluation committee and other sub committees.

Prior to his appointment at ETHS, Mr. Bufis completed two successful tenures at Westmont High School in Illinois and Great Mills High School in Maryland, where he is responsible for leading both programs to distinction. Ensembles under his direction performed at the Maryland State High School Band Festival and the Illinois Superstate Band Festival many times, an honor bestowed upon a select few programs in each state annually. Mr. Bufis is responsible for pioneering artist-in-residency programs at each of his former posts, collaborating with guest performers and conductors – most notably Ronald Romm (The Canadian Brass), Thomas Jöstlein (St. Louis Symphony), and composer Eric Ewazen (Concerto for Marimba and Orchestra – wind ensemble transcription premiere 2006). The Great Mills Wind Ensemble also performed annually at the Maryland Day ceremony in historic St. Mary’s City, including a performance attended by Governor Robert Ehrlich.

Mr. Bufis completed his graduate work through a two-year masters-in-residence assistantship program at the University of Illinois. During this time, he held Teaching Assistant positions within the music education department and the historic University of Illinois Band program. He worked with several wind band ensembles filling both primary and guest conductor roles, was the head TA for the Marching Illini, and directed the Basketball Band. During his time with the MI, Mr. Bufis was given the opportunity to write half-time drill and traveled with the band to the Rosebowl, Ireland, and England in 2008. In addition, Mr. Bufis was the director of the Champaign Central High School Jazz Lab Band during the 2007-2008 school year, part of the prestigious jazz program under the direction of Mr. John Currey. Mr. Bufis studied conducting with Steven Peterson, James Miller, Joseph Manfredo, James Keene, and Donald Schleicher and has worked with Mallory Thompson, John Whitwell, Jamie Nix, H. Robert Reynolds, and Allan McMurray in symposium settings. He studied euphonium with David Unland, Kenneth Steinsultz, and Mark Moore.

Mr. Bufis is an active guest lecturer on the topics of leadership and management, curriculum design, music teacher evaluation, music technology, and music education advocacy, presenting his work in these areas at state and national conferences and universities. He is also an active clinician and adjudicator, working with bands of all ages and ability levels. He has served as a leadership consultant for bands and sports teams on the East Coast and throughout the Midwest working with students, coaches, and teachers. Mr. Bufis has received five National Band Association Citations of Excellence in recognition of the Westmont and Evanston Township High School Band performances at the Illinois Superstate Concert Band Festival and has been nominated for inclusion in various "Who's Who" publications since 2004. He is an active member of ILMEA, NAfME, Phi Beta Mu, and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia. Mr. Bufis is an Eagle Scout of Troop 76 in Ringwood, New Jersey and garnered a varsity letter in collegiate men's swimming for his three years as an Ithaca College Bomber.

David Seifert - Associate Director of Bands, Head of Jazz

In August of 2016 David Seifert was appointed Associate Director of Bands and Head of Jazz at Evanston Township High School in Evanston, Illinois. In addition to overseeing the jazz program at ETHS, he assists with the marching band and concert bands. Prior to coming to Evanston Township High School, Mr. Seifert was the Director of Bands and the Fine Arts Team PLC Leader at Bloom Township High School in Chicago Heights, Illinois where he directed concert band, jazz band, percussion ensemble, marching band, pep band and pit orchestra. Under Mr. Seifert’s direction the band program was selected as the Official Pep Band for opening night of the 2016 IHSA Girls Basketball State Tournament at Illinois State University, presented with a NAMM Support Music Merit Award and invited to perform at Chicago area jazz venues such as Hackney’s and FitzGerald’s. The bands at BTHS also received Superior Ratings from adjudicators at Festivals such as the IHSA Organizational Contest, UIC Concert Band Festival, Jazz in the Meadows Festival and the North Shore Jazz Festival. Students from the BTHS band during Mr. Seifert’s tenure participated in the ILMEA District 1 Concert and Jazz Festivals and in high school honor bands located at Augustana College, Ball State University and Eastern Illinois University.
Mr. Seifert graduated Cum Laude from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater with a degree in Music Education where he was an award winning music student involved in the Symphonic Wind Ensemble and the Orchestra as principal percussionist. He also was the drumline captain in the marching band and participated in the percussion ensemble, pep band and the top jazz groups.
Mr. Seifert has been an ILMEA Percussion Coach of the All State Bands and Orchestras at the Illinois Music Education Conference in Peoria. He has performed at the Milwaukee Jazz Festival and at various Chicago venues. He has also performed with Steve Wiest, Jim Snidero, Tom Garling, José Encarnacion, the South Suburban Jazz Orchestra and the Midwest Philharmonic. In January of 2017 Mr. Seifert will present a clinic at the Illinois Music Education Conference on the topic of ensemble directors teaching general music. He is excited for the wonderful opportunity to teach at ETHS and looks forward to a great school year!
