Fannie May Candy - Delivery Date TBA In Early November
All Fine Arts students were given a presentation on Monday for our first program fund-raiser. This candy sale will run from Monday 9/28 through Tuesday 10/14. This is a fantastic fundraiser with big profits for our students (50%), and an actual savings for our consumers - the boxes will sell for LESS than what you would purchase them for on store shelves. Mr. Lehman is the contact for this Fannie May fundraiser - as his last school sold over $250,000 worth of Fannie May candy in 7 years. Mattress Sale - Saturday 10/10/2015
The Fine Arts Department is proud to present our second annual "Snoozefest" Mattress Sale Fundraiser scheduled for Saturday 10/10/2015! This one-day event could potentially generate thousands of dollars for both our individual students and our travel scholarship fund with a little bit of help from everyone. Our main vehicle for making money on this event is word of mouth! Please ask your band student for the fliers they were given in classes today - they must write their names on each flier prior to distributing them in order to be given sale credit.
A sign-up sheet will be passed around classes on Thursday and Friday of this week to volunteer on the day of the event. Students will be asked to pass out fliers, hold signs, and even wear Mattress Costumes at four strategic locations in Evanston in an effort to generate sales. Volunteers will be asked to sign up for 90 minute time periods from 9:30 - 11:00, 11:00 - 12:30, 12:30 - 2:00, and 2:00 - 3:30, and 3:30 - 5:00.

Spring Tour Updates
We had an excellent Spring Tour Information Night on Monday evening with great attendance. Below is a link to the materials which were distributed at the meeting along with answers to some of the questions we passed on to our travel agent. As always, all of the information is on our and is up to date as of today - please continue to check the site for more information. We have extended the registration deadline to October 15th! Your cards will be charged at that time.

Revised Itinerary 9/28/2015
1) Will payments be automatically debited each month from the card provided, or will parents have to go back in and make payments? Yes the payments are automatically debited each month. An email is set out about 3 days prior to the payment to remind families of it and then another email is sent once the payment has been complete as the receipt.
2) How do chaperones pay/register? Chaperones can register at the same time as the student. They would pick the chaperone travel type and then the occupancy they would like to have (single or double). Let's hold off until we can confirm a total amount of students going, which would give us the 1 to 10 ratio we budgeted for, and then we can prompt the parent chaperones to pay their first payment.
3) Does the trip insurance cover a cancellation of the entire band trip (like for a national disaster or something like this)? I don’t have an exact answer for this since the insurance is purchased and held through Travel Insured. I suggest having the parents call and confirm this. The number is 1-800-243-3174 option 6.
4) Is the deposit non-refundable? Since the group is on IPS, all payments made are non refundable. That is why we encourage the travel insurance. Parents have to click off on this during the registration process.
5) Could there be a clinic opportunity on the trip? I can see where we can fit that in. Since I know Matt knows the DC area pretty well, is there a place that you would specifically want me to look at? We in the past have worked with George Mason University and American University
6) When will the trip be "finalized." We are waiting on the two biggest pieces to lock in - the Kennedy Center and Blues Alley. For the Wind Ensemble, we hope to know a date for Millennium stage at the Kennedy Center by November. I am working on the Jazz performance. Blues Alley is trying to confirm their performer schedule and won’t commit until they have.
A reminder that auditions for 10th-12th Graders for placement in Symphonic Band and Wind Symphony will occur during periods 5 & 6 on Monday and Tuesday of next week. Please continue to prepare your excerpts, found at the link below!

Congratulations to our Wildkit Marching Band for their 3rd Place performance at the NIU Marching Band Competition yesterday! A great start to our competitive season! I have posted the video and adjudicator commentary to our website atwww.ethsbands.com under "Materials - Marching Band." You will find all of these comments as well as your first graded reflection assignment on this page. It should take you no more than 20-25 minutes to listen to TWO adjudicator commentaries, watch our professionally recorded video, and submit your reflection form electronically via the links on the webpage. Assignment #1 is due by Friday 10/2 for full credit. This was a great achievement - now let's prepare for a great week of rehearsal in preparation for our next performance!

A reminder that our first meeting for the spring tour is this Monday at 6:30 p.m. in the auditorium. We will be discussing the general outline for the trip, the payment plan, fundraising, and more! Band Ensemble & Chair Seating Auditions for 10th -12th Graders - 10/5 & 10/6
A reminder that we will be facilitating placement auditions for our 5th period and 6th period upperclassmen bands (Grade 10 - 12) on Monday & Tuesday October 5th and 6th. Hard copies of these auditions were distributed in classes this week. They are also posted on our webpage along with recordings in May of 2015. Future Music Educator Opportunities
The Illinois Music Educators Association and the Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic each offer wonderful opportunities for our high school students to attend workshops to learn about the field of music education. If you are a current Junior or Senior and would like to attend the Midwest Clinic (Thursday December 17th), or the ILMEA All-State Conference (Wednesday - Saturday, January 27th - January 30th), please speak with Mr. Bufis and Mr. Lehman. These are really great workshops and conferences that offer a glimpse into the field of music education.
ETHS will host our first semester Parent-Teacher Conferences on October 7th and 8th. As a music staff, we are often not available to meet with the parents of our music students during school-wide conferences, as ILMEA auditions annually occur on the first evening of fall conferences, and our Fine Arts spring tours are typically scheduled over spring conferences in an effort to minimize student absences from school. Please note that we will only be holding conferences on Thursday October 8th. In an effort to see more families this year, Mr. Bufis will hold conferences in the MIDI Lab (A112), and Mr. Lehman will hold conferences in the Jazz Room (A113) - these rooms are next to each other near the Band Hallway. For simplicity's sake, we ask that all Freshmen and Sophomore families schedule conferences with Mr. Lehman, and all Junior and Senior families schedule conferences with Mr. Bufis. Please make that distinction when you register using the online system. If you find that you are unable to schedule a time to meet with us, we are happy to try to find another date and time to meet with you to discuss your student's progress in the ETHS Band Program as well as discuss the many opportunities we have to offer within ETHS Bands.

****Please remember - with three events in a row, you will need to bring your t-shirt Thursday/Friday/Saturday. At our last event, 17 students forgot t-shirts and had to borrow a loaner. We simply cannot do this anymore - we don't have enough shirts to sustain this. If you have lost your shirt, please bring in $10 to purchase a new one.

You are receiving this email because as of last Friday 9/18, your grades are jeopardizing your eligibility to participate in sports, clubs/organizations, and musical/theatre ensembles and productions at Evanston Township High School. ETHS runs an academic intervention known as Study Table in an effort to help you improve your academic standing and eligibility status. Students are identified to participate in this program based on the following criteria:
Ineligible: Student is no passing 5 courses and therefore cannot practice or compete as of that day. They must attend the mandatory 3 tutorials and turn in their study table voucher.
Study Table: Student is receiving 2 or more grades of a C- or lower. Student can continue to practice/compete during the week, but must also attend the mandatory 3 tutorials and turn in their study table voucher or they risk being ineligible the following week.
You will find a link to a blank Extracurricular Study Table Voucher below. Please complete TWO tutorials this week, because it is a 4-day week, and return it to Mr. Bufis/Mr. Lehman by this Friday 9/25 by the end of the school day. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out - we are happy to help!

We expect the game time to run until 7:30 or 8:00 p.m. Please adjust your schedules accordingly for safe pickup time following the game.
* Weather has a huge impact on marching bands. We will be wearing rain coats and ball-caps tonight instead of our uniforms to save on dry-cleaning costs. If it starts to rain, we will leave the game early - even if the game is still going on. Repadding woodwind instruments costs $250-350 per instrument and our drums can also warp in the rain (Drumline equipment is more than $10K).
* Our volunteers will definitely be impacted by this schedule change. Please meet us at the stadium at 5:00 p.m. if you are available to help - regardless of whether or not you signed up to help.

If you are receiving this email, you have expressed interest in auditioning for the District 7 ILMEA honor groups! We are really pleased and impressed that you are interested in auditioning for ILMEA. We applaud your commitment to this challenging music!
As we mentioned at the start of school, we are only allowed to send 16 students (plus 2 color instruments such as bassoon, euphonium, bass clarinet, etc. for a total of 18) to represent ETHS at the District 7 auditions. Currently, we have 20 students who are interested in auditioning for Band/Orchestra Winds. Because we can only send 18 students, we will be holding our own pre-auditions for all 9th and 10th graders over the next three days. Once we hear all of these students, we will nominate the most prepared 9th and 10th graders to join our ETHS 11th and 12th graders at District 7 auditions (a total of 18 ETHS students will go on to district auditions). We have chosen to pre-audition our 9th and 10th graders because they are not yet All-State eligible and they still have two or three more years to audition for ILMEA while at ETHS.

This Friday you will report to the band room at the start of 9th Period. I will excuse you in HAC, but it is your responsibility to inform your teachers this week and to follow up with them as to what you missed. We will wear our Marching Band t-shirts to the pep rally!

Spirit Team Decorating The Music Wing
Our Spirit Team (Evan Foley, Cherese Waight, Abi Otwell, Muskaan Jain, Rachel Chaney-Egan, Jasper Davidoff) could use your help in decorating the Band wing this Friday morning for Game Day! Talk to a Spirit Team leader to get involved!
I have received the first eligibility report (academic standing) and will be communicating specific expectations to our students this week. A reminder that all students must carry better than a C in all of their classes to be able to participate in Marching Band, the Jazz Program, YAMO, etc. in accordance with the school's activity code in order to avoid Study Table sheets or suspension from extra/co-curricular activities. Let's work together to keep our grades up!

Regrettably, we were unable to perform at the third annual Boosterpalooza event this evening due to unanticipated bus issues. Special thanks to our department secretary, Ann Hunwick, and our department chair, Nick Gehl, for their efforts in trying to arrange alternative transportation for us on short notice.
I am proud of our kids - while they were "all dressed up with nowhere to go," they understood the situation and handled it with professionalism and grace. We will all look forward to our next performance at Homecoming next Friday!

Today, all freshmen received a handout detailing the first Chair Test that will be held on Thursday, September 17th during their Band (or Marching Band) class.
There are two parts to this Chair Test:
1. Perform Basic Lip Slurs/Chromatic Scales (Brass—Lip Slurs, WW and Mallets—Chromatic Scales). This portion WILL need to be performed from memory. Basic Lip Slurs/Chromatic Scales can be found here: Basic Lip Slurs/Chromatic Scales
2. Perform the two excerpts on their handout. Please note tempo indications, key signatures, dynamics, and other expressive markings in the music. This portion will NOT need to be performed from memory.
This Chair Test will be performed in front of a Flip Video or Zoom Camera. This will serve as chair placements for First Quarter and will count as an Individual Performance Assessment (40 Points).

Tour Information - Washington D.C. Wednesday 2/24 - Monday 2/29 2016
The ETHS Band Department proudly presents our trip to Washington D.C.! All of the information has been updated on our website under "Spring Tour". Important dates, payment and scholarship information, itinerary, rehearsal schedule and more can be found online! Please visit www.ethsbands.com for more information.
While this trip is not a requirement for our band students, we planned this trip with the intention of offering an accessible and enjoyable music experience for our entire program - with costs coming in around $1,000 paid over a five-month period. It is our hope that our band students make every effort to accompany us on tour. We encourage you to take part in our many planned fundraisers and take advantage of scholarship/financial aid as needed. It's going to be a great trip! Jazz Information Night
Jazz Information Night will be on Tuesday, September 8th at 7:00pm in the Auditorium. This meeting will provide information on: program expectations, a calendar of events, rehearsal and performance schedules, details about our annual Evanston Jazz Festival, and much more! In addition, this will give me a chance to meet all of our new jazz families and answer any questions.
This meeting is a necessary component for providing you with all of the information needed for the year. Attendance from all our jazz students and at least one parent/guardian will be crucial for a successful year—we look forward to seeing you there!

A few updates as we go into an exciting weekend at Northwestern University! Please see attached for the ticket information - you can always purchase tickets at the door! Only the 4 chaperones listed below will be able to accompany/sit with the band in the stands at no charge, so get your tickets to be in on the fun!
NU Band Day Schedule (As Excerpted from ETHS Bands GoogleCalendar)
6:15 a.m. - Call time at ETHS. Get dressed, grab instruments and equipment
6:40 a.m. - Depart for NU
7:00 a.m. - Arrive at NU
7:20 a.m. - Mass Band rehearsal on practice field
8:05 a.m. - Guard rehearsal
8:10 a.m. - Final Runthrough
8:45 a.m. - NUMB performs for the high schools
9:00 a.m. - Students can purchase lunch at concession stands
10:30 a.m. - Students are seated in stadium
10:40 a.m. - NU Marching Band Pregame
11:00 a.m. - Kickoff - NU vs Northern Illinois
Halftime - Performance by high schools and NUMB
At the conclusion of the game (approximately 1:00 p.m.), students will board buses and return to ETHS for dismissal.

A reminder that you must bring your t-shirt, cap, and black socks! We will be performing Uptown Funk, Uma Thurmon, and Shake it Off with nearly 1,000 band members - it's going to be a blast!

Plans are underway for our spring trip to Washington D.C. Because we plan to travel to the Northeast from February 24th-29th, a parade is not really an option for us. We will, however, be performing at one of the monuments on the mall, which provides an opportunity for the Color Guard to perform. In coordinating with our travel agent, here are the opportunities they initially thought to arrange for us - but it is not limited to these options. I am interested in your ideas! Please think about what you might want to do and I will look into it!
Thoughts on Color Guard Opportunities:
-work in a visual performance for them during the Monument performance
-they can participate in the exchange concert with you
-find a clinic opportunity at a local university for a dance workshop or similar.
Please provide feedback by next Friday 9/11 so that we can get plans in place.
Good Morning Jazz Families,
We had a great week of jazz auditions—thank you to all who auditioned!
Audition results will be posted on Friday, September 4th at the end of the school day on the bulletin board outside the Jazz Room (A113). Results will also be emailed.
Jazz Information Night will be on TUESDAY, September 8th at 7:00pm in the Auditorium. This meeting will provide information on: program expectations, a calendar of events, rehearsal and performance schedules, details about our annual Evanston Jazz Festival, and much more! In addition, this will give me a chance to meet all of our jazz families and answer any questions.
This meeting is a necessary component for providing you with all of the information needed for the year. Attendance from all our jazz students and at least one parent/guardian will be crucial for a successful year.
I am excited for a great jazz season and I look forward to meeting everyone.
