Band Announcements - Band Day, Composition Contest, & More!

Good Afternoon Band Students and Families,
A few important announcements as we head towards the weekend!

Band Day This Friday 10/31
This Friday is our annual Band Day experience for our 7th and 8th grade District 65 students.  A reminder that all Marching Band members will attend 6th Period Band Class, all Fall Symphonic Band members will attend 5th Period Band Class, and all Non-Marching Freshmen will attend 4th Period Band Class.  Marching Band students are to wear their marching band t-shirts and jeans - they will line up in the hallway at the start of 6th period and enter the auditorium just as we did on the concert last week.  Fall Symphonic Band students are to enter the auditorium stage at the start of Period 5 - I will pass out your folders from the concert last week.  Jazz Ensemble students are to report at the start of Period 5 as well, as discussed in rehearsals.
We desperately need some assistance setting up for Band Day after school tomorrow.  If you are available and interested, join us in the music wing from 3:35 - 4:30 so we can set up the stage, rehearsal rooms, and practice rooms for our 225 guests!

Honors Credit Form
We went over the Honors Credit form in 5th Period today and will go over it tomorrow in Period 4 and Period 6.  Please use this as a planning worksheet - look it over, fill it out, and turn it in by next Friday 11/7.  Feel free to ask us if you have any questions.  We will move students into the appropriate section (Honors or Standard) by the end of MQ2.  See below for the link to the form on our webpage:

Basketball Pep Band - Winter Guard - Winter Drumline - Mentorship Program
As we wrap up Marking Quarter 1 and transition into our Concert Bands, we are also putting together the schedules for the experiences listed above.  Stay tuned for more information coming soon!

Concert Band Materials
Each of the three curricular concert bands have a webpage devoted specifically to them at
http://www.ethsbands.com  These pages contain professional reference recordings of the pieces we are learning, recordings of our groups in rehearsal and performance, and assignments.  The students have been shown how to access these pages several times during classes, but here is a reminder via email.  Students are expected to monitor these pages on a regular basis for updated recordings and assignments as well as to listen to the professional recordings provided through this interface.  The links for each page are below for your reference:

ILMEA Composition Contest Deadline
This Monday November 3rd is the Post-mark deadline for submitting original compositions to the ILMEA composition contest.  Evanston Township has had a healthy representation of contest winners for many years.  Students who place 1st, 2nd, or 3rd have the honor of accompanying us to the All-State Festival and Conference in Peoria in January where they will attend special sessions on composition as well as two composition showcase concerts featuring the work of contest winners.  Please see the link below for the information and required application form.  Mr. Bufis will need to add his signature and membership number to each application before you put it in the mail.  Read the application carefully - it will help you to determine the category of your composition.  You must accompany your entry with a recording of your piece - computer generated MIDI is adequate, but live music is always best if possible.

Freshmen Concert Band Chair Test
Second Quarter Chair Tests for the Freshmen Concert Band will be next Wednesday, November 5th during 4th period.  This Chair Test will be performed in front of a Flip Video or Zoom Camera and will count for an assessment grade (40 points) for the second quarter.  Handouts will be passed out tomorrow during class; however, a PDF of the Chair Test Materials can be found at the link below.  Please reach out to Mr. Lehman with any additional questions.

Thriller Recap and Concert Week Info!

Good Afternoon Marching Band Families!
Thanks to all for a great game on Friday night!  I am still getting emails and texts from our Athletic department - the crowd was on their feet for our show, which was definitely exciting.  I have provided a link below to the performance.  No reflection this week - we will do one final reflection in about a week and I will include some thoughts about this last game in that assignment.  Thanks to Layla Werner's family, Cherese Waight's family, and Mary/Kathy Bauer for the footage of our
Thriller show!  And coincidentally, the NU Marching Band also did a Thriller show at Saturday's game vs. Nebraska!

Thriller Show Pictures and Videos

Thanks also to our parent volunteers for all of their help - and for the Boosters for providing food for our game!  Rachel Wham, Cathy Bouxsein, Bonnie Bean, Barbara Badr, Kathy Bauer, Jane Dowd, Christina Peters, and Elliot Frolichstein-Appel - thanks so much!
Lastly, congratulations to all of our senior band members and their parents!  Thanks for a great 4 years - we hope this final game was an opportunity to go out with a bang!

Marching Band Senior Night
This Friday is Senior Night for our Band, Football, Cheerleaders, and Pomkits at our final home game.  Our senior band students will be prompted to sign-up to be acknowledged at the game in our classes today.  They will be asked who they will be accompanied by as well.  I will turn this list in to our Athletic Director prior to the game tomorrow.  If you plan to attend and your son/daughter is not in school today to sign-up, please send me an email - I am happy to add you to the list!  All Senior Band Students and Families should report to the field at 6:15-6:30 Friday evening to get in line ALPHABETICALLY.  You will eventually line up outside of the fence in the North endzone, while the football team lines up inside of the fence.  Mike and I will be on hand to provide further instructions at the time of the procession.
The Boosters will be providing dinner for our kids this week - all barbecue foods (hamburger, veggie burger, cheese burger, hot dog, or brat).  We are looking forward to a great meal!  Students were surveyed for meal options in class yesterday.  I will follow up with them today to make sure I have all of the orders!
Lastly, this week's show will be a Big-Ten style THRILLER show (Michael Jackson).  Our band is learning new drill and music for this game, along with the authentic and iconic Michael Jackson choreography to the hit song.  It's going to be a great night for everyone and we think the student section and fans will get a kick out of this.  If students would like to practice more, here are some helpful links:

Band Announcements 10/3

Good Afternoon Band Families,
I hope that everyone had a great week!  We are looking forward to a great weekend with the Wildkit Marching Band.  A few Band Program updates below!

Wildkit Marching Band Competition
This weekend, our ETHS Wildkit Marching Band will be competing at the annual St. Rita Mustang Stampede on the south side of Chicago.  This festival will feature 12 regional high school bands from Illinois.  In preparation for this event, all of the band students in our program came to the 6th Period Marching Band class to view a demonstration and performance from our Wildkit Marching Band.  In addition to our fall competitive halftime show, the Marching Band lead all of our students in the ETHS Cheer Song and our traditional drum cadences and cheers, which we share with the Northwestern University Marching Band.  A photo from the day is below.  Good luck Wildkit Marching Band!

Future Music Educator Opportunities
The Illinois Music Educators Association and the Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic each offer wonderful opportunities for our high school students to attend workshops to learn about the field of music education.  If you are a current Junior or Senior and would like to attend the Midwest Clinic (Thursday December 18th), or the ILMEA All-State Conference (Wednesday - Saturday, January 28th - January 31st), please speak with Mr. Bufis and Mr. Lehman.  These are really great workshops and conferences that offer a glimpse into the field of music education.

Fannie May Fundraiser
All Fine Arts students were given a presentation today for our first program fund-raiser.  This candy sale will run from Monday 9/28 through Tuesday 10/14.  This is a fantastic fundraiser with big profits for our students (50%), and an actual savings for our consumers - the boxes will sell for LESS than what you would purchase them for on store shelves.  Mr. Lehman is the contact for this Fannie May fundraiser - as his last school sold over $250,000 worth of Fannie May candy in 7 years.  If you have any questions regarding Fannie May, contact Mr. Lehman at lehmanm@eths.k12.il.us.  See attached for the Fannie May flier and sales sheet.

We look forward to meeting and catching up with many of you this week at Parent-Teacher Conferences!  Have a great weekend!
