Basketball Pep Band
We are excited to start our 2015-2016 Basketball Pep Band! This group is open to all of our instrumentalists in our band program - woodwind, brass, and percussion - including a full rhythm section of guitar, bass, piano, and drums! We are looking forward to a great season! For a full calendar, the flier, and the sign-up page, please visit the links below!
Band Mentorship Program
The mentorship program at ETHS pairs upperclassmen instrumentalists with underclassmen or novice music students - cultivating a student learning community within the band program at large. This setting provides opportunities to learn practice techniques, work on band or jazz ensemble music, focus on pertinent elements of music such as tone, intonation, range, or technique, or even develop your skills on a secondary instrument.
The ETHS Band Mentorship program runs from November through May and is open to any ETHS Band student as a mentor or mentee. The mentorship program kicks off with a morning mentorship breakfast meeting to pair-up mentees with mentors, compare student schedules, and set weekly or bi-weekly meeting times for the duration of the program. Students are required to log their meetings on the mentorship bulletin board each time they meet. In order to receive honors credit for being a mentor or mentee, students must meet the minimum meeting requirement as outlined on the mentorship program bulletin board. This is a wonderful opportunity for all ETHS band students and we highly encourage everyone to participate!
Wind Symphony Exchange Concert (Required For All ETHS Band Members)
The ETHS Wind Symphony will be hosting the Matthew Flinders Anglican College Wind Symphony from Brisbane, Queensland Australia for a special performance on Tuesday December 15th, 2015 at 7:00 p.m. All Band students are required to attend this special concert, featuring our own ETHS Wind Symphony as well as a group of their musical peers from the land down under. The concert will feature guest conductor Burt Alders, the president of the World Association of Symphonic Bands and Ensembles (WASBE) and will include classic and recent works for the wind band medium. In addition, Director of Bands Emeritus from the University of Illinois Mr. James Keene will be guest conducting our own Wind Symphony.
All ETHS Wind Symphony members are expected to attend the afternoon activities with our guests, which will include a rehearsal experience as well as a 5:45 p.m. dinner for the two groups. We will be catering in Chicago-style deep dish pizza for our Wind Symphony students and our guests, but we ask that our Wind Symphony students bring an appetizer or salad (last names N through Z) or a dessert (last names A through M). We are looking forward to a great experience!
Have a great weekend,
Mr. Bufis and Mr. Lehman
Thank you again to all for a terrific season! As I said last week, this is a great season to build on. We are thankful for the hard work of all of our members and look forward to kicking off a successful 2016 season next year.
Per our instructions in band classes, please return all of your chips, lyres/flip folders, and pep chart books to the labeled bins in the front of the band room. In addition, all of your personal items from your uniforms, garment bags, hat boxes, etc. have been placed in your shoe cubby. Please claim these items by next Friday 11/20. All senior band members can either claim their t-shirt/cap/shoes or choose to donate them back to the program.
Thanks again - congratulations on a very special fall!
Fannie May Candy will be ready for pick up on Monday, November 9th from 2:00pm-4:00pm. Band students/parents can enter through Door #9, pick up their orders in the area behind the Auditorium Stage, and exit out Door #7. Students with large orders should plan accordingly with rides, extra help, etc. to pick up their order. Please be prompt with delivering the products to your customers.
Congratulations to our students for making this fundraiser a huge success and our most lucrative fundraiser ever! Our band sold $24,000 worth of chocolate and our Music Department as a whole sold over $35,000. As a department we put over $17,000 into individual students accounts! As a reminder, fundraised money in your student’s individual Band account can be used to offset fees for Band Trips, Marching Band expenses, and Jazz Band/Combo expenses!
Our next fundraising opportunity for students will coincide with the Holiday Season: Poinsettia and Cyclamen Plant Sale. Information for this sale will be coming out soon!
Have a good day,
Mike Lehman and Matt Bufis
As discussed in rehearsal today, 2nd quarter brings a new concert cycle with new music and another round of Chair Tests. The Concert Band 2nd Quarter Chair Test will be on Tuesday, November 10th during 4th period. Hard copies of the 2nd Quarter Chair Test will be distributed tomorrow in rehearsal; however, electronic copies can be downloaded: Here
As a reminder:
- All Chair Test excerpts are pulled DIRECTLY from the music we’ll be performing this concert cycle (specifically Sleepers, Wake & Tenth Regiment March)
- Professional recordings of these tunes can be found on the Materials section of our website—these are a great resource and practice aide.
- Mr. Bufis and myself are always eager to work with any student before or after school—send us an email to set up a time!
As you may have heard, our football team finished their season last Friday with a loss against South Elgin HS. The team had a really great season - truly exciting to watch. We congratulate the players and coaching staff on a fantastic fall.
As we bring our season to a close this Friday, a few important announcements are listed below.
Marching Band Banquet - This Friday 11/6 from 5:00 - 7:00 in A241
This Friday will be our annual Marching Band Banquet. It will be a final opportunity to meet as a marching band in a formal setting for 2015. We will honor our seniors, watch a season highlights video, award superlative prizes, hear senior speeches, and have a great time. All parents of senior band members are invited to attend. Seniors should prepare a 2 minute speech reflecting on their time in the marching band, the relationships they have made, the experiences they have had, and the overall impact their time in the ETHS Marching Band has had on their development. This is a time to be thankful and celebrate our time together.
Last names A - M should bring a DESSERT for 10 people
Last names N - Z should bring an APPETIZER for 10 people
Superlatives - Please vote even if you think you did before, this is the official form:
Due to our significant growth and successes this season, the district has agreed to move up the purchase date for new uniforms to be ready for next season. The company we are working with has mocked up a few designs for us. Please complete the uniform survey below. There is a good chance that we will not pick any specific template found here, but instead will gather data based on the elements you like. Please make sure to give us some feedback in the "Notes" section at the bottom of the survey.
Returning of Equipment
Please take some time this week to return all of your borrowed equipment and clean up your space (lockers, tuba/color guard closet, percussion room, etc.). Please also return the following to the bins in the band room:
Drill Chips in ziplock bag
Pep Chart Books
Looking forward to a great weekend!
