Band Announcements 5/22/2015

Good Afternoon Band Families,
Congratulations to all of our students for a great concert last night!  The emails are really flooding in today in response to a fantastic evening of very fine musicianship.  We extend our best wishes to all of our graduating seniors and their families and are grateful for their years of service and dedication to our music program.  A few announcements as we head into our final weeks together of the 2014-2015 school year!

Senior Instrument & Equipment Return
All instruments and equipment from graduating seniors (mutes, mouthpieces, etc.) were due back to our department today.  If you still have any of these items at home, please return them to our band room on Tuesday.  If you will be performing in our Orchestra concert on Wednesday, you can return all of your school-owned equipment to the band room following the concert.  We are updating our inventory so that we can accommodate our incoming freshmen class, so please return your instruments promptly.

Final Reflection Assignment
A final reflection assignment has been posted to our website under the "Materials" section.  We have not had many opportunities to create graded assignments for our upperclassmen over the last two weeks due to AP exams, so this assignment will represent the only grade in the "Reflection" category of the grade book for this quarter for 5th and 6th periods.  This assignment, designed for all 9th-11th grade band students (SENIORS ARE EXEMPT), is due by Thursday 5/28 by 1:15 p.m.  We look forward to reading your responses to questions regarding the Spring Concert performances as well as the 2014-2015 school year.

Graduation Band - Sunday May 31st at McGaw Hall (Northwestern University)
All Sophomore and Junior Band Members are required to perform as part of our graduation band for the ETHS Commencement Ceremony.  This event counts as your final performance grade of the year.  Call time for all performers is 10:00 a.m. for a 10:30 pre-commencement concert and 11:00 ceremony.  The event is usually over within 90 minutes.  ETHS will transport all large instruments to and from McGaw Hall, however all students are responsible for coordinating their own transportation to this event.
In preparation for the graduation ceremony, all Sophomore and Junior band students will attend 6th Period Band ALL WEEK next week, from Tuesday 5/26 through Friday 5/29.  We will work on Pomp and Circumstance, Crown Imperial, and several selections from our current and previous concert cycles to coordinate an excellent concert experience for our graduating seniors and their families.  This is always a very special and fun time of year and we are looking forward to putting this together with you!

Color Guard Auditions - This Saturday 5/23 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. in Auditorium
This Saturday, our ETHS Color Guard will be hosting an open tryout and workshop with Mr. William Frankenberger, the award-winning color guard coach from Prospect High School in Mt. Prospect, IL.  The clinic will emphasize flag and body work, drills and warmups, and a basic choreographed routine.  Are you a good dancer or actor?  The ETHS Color Guard may be just what you are looking for!

Have a wonderful Memorial Day Weekend!

Concert & Other Spring Announcements 2015

Good Evening Everyone,
We have some big weeks planned as we sprint to the close of a fantastic school year.  We hope you are looking forward to our final events of the year as much as we are!  Our students have really worked hard this quarter in preparation for Thursday evening's performance.  We look forward to seeing you there!

Spring Band Concert - Thursday 5/21 at 7:30 p.m.
All three bands will report for warm-up at 6:50 p.m. - Concert Band to the Band Room, Symphonic Band to the Orchestra Room, and Wind Symphony to the Auditorium Stage.  Following warmup, Symphonic Band and Wind Symphony students will bring their instruments with them to the auditorium seating in an effort to cut down on transition time throughout the program.  We anticipate that the evening will run 75 - 90 minutes, including our annual awards ceremony, followed by a reception to honor our senior band members.

As the concert approaches, we would like to ask that our band students and families spend a few minutes talking about concert etiquette prior to our community event.  Our expectation for our students is that they be supportive peer members and active listeners for the duration of the concert, with respect for each other as well as for the wonderful community of patrons who attend our annual event.  We have reinforced this expectation throughout our daily preparation this week for what will surely  be an evening  of wonderful performances.  Thank you in advance for your support!

Congratulations ETHS Jazz Ensemble!

Congratulations to the Evanston Township High School Jazz Ensemble!
Based on an audition submitted this spring, the ETHS Jazz Ensemble has been invited to perform at the 2016 Illinois Music Educators Association (ILMEA) Illinois Music Education Conference (IMEC)!  Bringing over 10,000 people together each year, IMEC (formally known as the All-State Conference) is the premier event of the ILMEA. IMEC offers professional development opportunities such as: clinics, lectures, and demonstrations for music educators and hosts the finest high school musicians from around the state.  In addition, exemplar school bands, orchestras, choirs, and jazz bands are selected to perform throughout the conference.  Last year, only three high school jazz bands from Illinois were invited to perform at IMEC—being selected as a performing group is an incredible achievement and honor for our students, school, and community!
A special thank you to this year’s Jazz Ensemble seniors who were part of the audition process that made this 2016 IMEC performance opportunity possible:

Noah Bearman, Alto Saxophone
Benjamin Bouxsein, Trumpet

Color Guard Tryouts
As many of you know, Coach Long has decided to leave the Chicago area and has resigned her post as our Color Guard Coach.  We wish her well in her new endeavors and are thankful for her guidance over the last three seasons.  The ETHS Color Guard Coach position has been posted online for a little over two weeks.  We have several strong candidates to consider with a wealth of experience and we are looking forward to filling this important position within our staff as soon as possible.  In the meantime, we are pleased to announce that Color Guard Tryouts are scheduled for Saturday May 23rd from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. in the PE Wing (exact location to be announced).  These tryouts will be facilitated by none other than Coach William Frankenberger, award winning coach of the nationally recognized Prospect High School Color Guard.  Coach Frankenberger is an amazing teacher with many accolades and years of experience in the high school and Drum Corps International scenes.  We are thrilled to have him with us for this important recruitment day.  Please help us spread the word so we can build on the efforts of our fantastic Color Guard members!

Go Kits!
