ETHS Jazz Showcase RECAP and THANK YOU

Good Afternoon Jazz Families,

Congratulations on two days of great performances this weekend at the ETHS Jazz Showcase!  It has been a great year for the Jazz Program at ETHS and I am extremely proud of our students.  They have a clear passion and determination for the music we all love, Jazz.  Whether in rehearsal or on stage, volunteering at our festival or traveling to another, our students have represented themselves, ETHS, and this music in the best way—thank you

Please note the 2015-2016 ETHS Jazz Audition Materials will be available in April on
www.ethsjazz.com.  Every student interested in participating in an ETHS Big Band or Combo is required to complete an ETHS Jazz Audition.  The ETHS Jazz Audition Materials are the exact same materials used for the Illinois Music Educators Association (ILMEA) Jazz Auditions.  This modification was implemented to increase the number of ETHS students who audition for ILMEA Jazz and subsequently make an ILMEA Jazz group.  ETHS Jazz Auditions will be held August 25th-28th.  An online sign up form will be available in August.

Thank you one and all for a great year of jazz and thank you for your continued support!

Mr. Lehman

Concert Week Band Announcements - March 2nd through 6th, 2015

Good Afternoon Band Families,
A few updates as we prepare for the next couple of weeks!

Winter Music Festival Concert - Wednesday March 4th 2015 7:00 p.m.
As our concert approaches, we wanted to remind all of our athletes to communicate with their coaches about tomorrow evening's performance, and their music teachers about their specific athletic tryouts.  Per our annual arrangement with the Athletic Department, all musicians are to be released from tryouts prior to their scheduled performance with enough time to change into concert attire.  All of our musician-athletes may return to tryouts promptly at the conclusion of their portion of the concert.  Tryouts are not an excused absence from a quarterly graded concert performance.  Please be prompt in your communication to your teachers and coaches so we can assist in the navigation of any obstacles.

As the concert approaches, we would like to ask that our band students and families spend a few minutes talking about concert etiquette prior to our community event.  Our expectation for our students is that they be supportive peer members and active listeners for the duration of the concert, with respect for each other as well as for the wonderful community of patrons who attend our annual event.  We have reinforced this expectation throughout our daily preparation this week for what will surely be an afternoon  of wonderful performances.  Thank you in advance for your support!

We are nearly one month away from the ETHS Solo and Ensemble Festival, hosted by our music department for our students.  This event is an opportunity for students to perform accompanied solos as well as duets, trios, and chamber pieces in front of a small audience and music evaluator for a rating and feedback.  We will host the instrumental performances in our band room from 4:00 - 9:00 p.m.  Please consider performing a solo or small group composition at this event!  Please coordinate with your small groups and accompanists so we can put a schedule together with ease.  A list of past accompanists is located on our website at:  http://www.ethsbands.com/faculty_staff/piano_accompanists.html
A digital version of our Solo & Ensemble Registration Form can be found at the link below.  Hard copies will be distributed in classes tomorrow!  All Registration Forms are due to Mr. Bufis by Friday March 6th so that a first draft of the schedule can be created.

Jazz Announcements
Jazz Ensemble @ Louisville Jazz Festival
The ETHS Jazz Ensemble had a fantastic weekend at the University of Louisville Jazz Festival.  The group got to hear ensembles from Indiana, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Ohio throughout Friday and Saturday.  They attended lectures and performances from composer/performer Alan Broadband, trumpeter Derrick Gardner, and trombonist Vincent Gardner as well as the University of Louisville Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Faculty.  The ETHS Jazz Ensemble and Kind of Blue Combo performed exceedingly well and were workshopped by Jarrard Harris and Chris Buselli.  It was a fantastic trip and the students represented ETHS well!

Jazz Showcase Concerts
The ETHS Jazz Program will be wrapping up the jazz season this weekend with two performances.  All concerts are free and open to the public!
Friday March 6th, 7:00 p.m. - All Jazz Combos and the ETHS Jazz Ensemble, Terrace Dining Hall

ETHS Wind Symphony @ New Trier
The ETHS Wind Symphony will be sharing a concert in a few weeks with the New Trier High School Symphonic Wind Ensemble and the Carl Sandburg High School Wind Ensemble.  We are looking forward to a great opportunity to make music together and work with Mr. James F. Keene - Director of Bands Emeritus from the University of Illinois.  A full schedule of events is being assembled in preparation for our afternoon and evening event at New Trier on Friday March 20th.  Wind Symphony students will be working with Mr. Keene on Wednesday evening March 18th from 6:00 - 8:30 p.m. in our band room.  Please mark both of these dates on your calendar and clear all of your conflicts.  Mr. Keene is one of the last remaining conductors of his era - this will be a monumental and historic opportunity for ETHS!

Equipment Recall
The music department, with the help of the ETHS Boosters, has purchased 30 chromatic tuner/metronome devices and about 10 each of trumpet/trombone straight, cup, and harmon mutes.  Many of these items have been misplaced in the shuffle of our year - through concerts, public performances, festivals, trips, etc.  Please help us to recover these missing items - they were a one-time purchase in an effort to provide necessary equipment to our program.  If you have any of these items, please return them as soon as possible so that we can continue to prepare for our upcoming events.

Chase Bailey Completes Eagle Project

We are extremely grateful to Chase Bailey for all of his efforts in coordinating our music stand restoration project.  Chase and about two dozen Boy Scouts, family members, and ETHS Band members sanded, painted, stenciled, and tightened over 100 music stands last Sunday as his Eagle Scout project.  To give you all an idea, a pack of 6 new music stands costs over $500 - so this was a big savings for our district.  Thank you Chase for giving our music wing a much needed face lift!

Elmhurst College Music Faculty Visits ETHS Bands
This Monday, March 9th, we will be visited by five music faculty members from Elmhurst College.  These professors will be performing and lecturing for all of our band students during their scheduled band periods.  We are looking forward to this wonderful opportunity!  Read more about each guest below:

Elmhurst College Music Department - Visit the webpage for a brief bio of each faculty member!

Kari Lee (Trumpet)
