A few quick announcements as we head into the (Spring-like) weekend:
Dixie Classics Festivals
This weekend marks the first of several festival events we will be hosting for the Dixie Classics Festival Company. Students were asked to sign-up to volunteer as stage crew workers and group guides, to be compensated in volunteer hours for NHS and other such organizations, or for a $50 deposit into their Band Fundraising account. If you have volunteered to help out in these events, please report to the band room at 8:00 a.m. tomorrow dressed in all black attire. Your clothes do not need to be dressy, as you will be moving equipment throughout the morning, but they should be appropriate for school. We expect to be done with tomorrow's commitment around noon.
Solo & Ensemble Festival
There have been some small changes to the order. Please continue to check online for any updates. A reminder that the festival is this coming Thursday April 3rd, from 4:00 - 9:00 p.m. in the band room. The link to the festival information and schedule is posted below. Please come out to support our many talented ETHS band students as they perform their solo and ensemble pieces!
Color Guard Success
It is with great pleasure that we share with you some excellent color guard news. All winter long, our color guard has been working on fundamentals and a new routine as part of our Winter Guard program, run by Coach Emily Long. The group performed at a competition this past Sunday, placing ahead of two other schools in their division. This is a wonderful achievement for the ETHS Winter Guard, now in its second season as an organization. Congratulations to the ETHS Winter Guard and to their coach, Ms. Emily Long!
District 65/202 Jazz Night
A reminder that all of the District 65 Jazz Bands will be joining the ETHS Jazz Ensemble in a concert this Monday evening in the upstairs theatre at 7:00 p.m. This will be the last performance for the Jazz Ensemble this year! Come out to support the Jazz Ensemble members and welcome our future ETHS Band students!
Have a great weekend!
Mike Lehman and Matt Bufis

Mr. Bufis and Mr. Lehman
As we begin our day in The Big Apple, we wanted to share a few announcements with you.
For Trip Families and Interested Parties
Be on the lookout for tour blog posts and picture uploads at the end of each day! We have added two new pages within the "Spring Tour" section of our website called "NYC Pictures 2014" and "Tour Blog". We look forward to sharing our experience with you!
For All Other Band Students
In an effort to share our experience with you while we are away, our band classes will be watching a video of the New York Philharmonic on Friday, and Jazz at Lincoln Center on Monday. We hope that you find these clips to be educational and enjoyable!
Solo and Ensemble Festival
We hope you have been thinking about participating in our Solo and Ensemble festival at ETHS on April 3rd. If you are interested in signing up, please follow the link below to download and print your entry form. We will need these forms and entry fees by next Wednesday, March 19th so we can draft a schedule.
A reminder that our 4th Quarter concert band auditions will take place on Thursday March 20th during band classes. Excerpts are available in hard copy at the front of the band room, or digitally at http://tinyurl.com/marchchairauditon
All band students must complete the March Concert performance reflection form while listening to the concert recordings. The form and mp3s are located at: http://www.ethsbands.com/materials/concert_bands.html
Have a wonderful weekend!
Matt and Mike
4th Quarter Chair Audition materials for the Concert Band were passed out on Friday and will be passed out tomorrow for the Symphonic Band and Wind Symphony.
All Chair Auditions will take place during your student’s band class on Thursday March 20th. The Chair Audition will be performed in front a Flip Video or Zoom Camera and will count for an assessment grade.
If your child needs another copy of the Chair Audition materials, they can be found at the following link: http://tinyurl.com/marchchairauditon
Students are encouraged to use the recordings posted on our band website, additional professional recordings online, private lesson teachers, and/or Mr. Bufis and Mr. Lehman to help them with their preparation.
Mike Lehman and Matt Bufis
Thank you for a great NYC Tour Band meeting last evening. We are looking forward to a fantastic trip! A few details to cover as we make our final preparations:

Ms. Reed (Choir Director) Mr. Abplanalp (Orchestra Director)
Todd Bruggeman (Father of Kurt Bruggeman) Liz Gosma (Violin Teacher/Mrs. Abplanalp)
Nick Ehrlich (Father of Collin Ehrlich) Kathy Bauer (Mother of Mary/Sara Bauer)
Karen Bailey (Mother of Chase Bailey) Jan MacDermaid (Mother of Jamie Carthew)
Tour Meeting Handouts
At our meeting, we handed out a final itinerary as well as a “What To Pack” info sheet. Both of these items are available for download on our website. We also handed out a draw-string backpack to each student who will be joining us on the trip which were given to us by our travel agent. We have extra bags as well as itineraries available for your convenience – just ask!
Tour Contact Information
We have a travel cell-phone, which will be on us at all times. If you need to contact your band student directly, you can reach them on their personal cell phone. Matt and I can be reached at:
Emergency Contact: Band Trip Cell Phone: (847) 571-3835
Food Allergies and Medications
If your traveling band student takes any medication, please indicate as such on the required medical forms. If you need us to monitor your student’s medication dosage, please make arrangements with us immediately. If you have any food allergies or require any accommodations (vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free, nuts, etc.), please make contact with us immediately. As mentioned at the meeting last night, we gathered this data from our students 6 weeks ago and reported it to our travel agent – but please contact us to be sure we have included your student in our plans.
Final Payments and Paperwork
At the meeting last night, we had an updated fund-balance sheet to tell you what your student owed as a final payment for the trip. The final fundraising totals can be found on our website (http://www.ethsbands.com/spring_tour/account_balances.html) or you can contact our Fine Arts Secretary, Ms. Ann Hunwick, directly firstname.lastname@example.org As of this Friday, March 7th, if you have not turned in your final trip payment or are missing any forms (Medical Form, Permission Slip), you cannot join us on the trip. This is both for the overall safety of our students and for the financial future of our band program. With over $100,000 filtered through our accounts to make trip payments this year, we simply cannot afford to not be paid in full for this expensive but worthwhile venture. Thank you for your help with this!

As indicated on our “What to Pack” sheet, each student is limited to one suitcase and one carry-on bag in addition to their instrument. Be sure to label all of your bags properly (Name, Address, ETHS Band, etc.). Students should pack a change of clothes (layers preferred) for Thursday when we arrive in New York as we will go straight into the city for a full day of activities without stopping at the hotel. Check the “What to Pack” sheet for more specifics!
Ladies—Black closed-toed shoes, Black Slacks (no
jeans, no capris, no tights, etc), and White Blouse or
Collared shirt (short or long sleeve)
Gentlemen—Black Dress Shoes (no gym shoes),
Black Socks, Black Dress Pants/Slacks (no jeans),
White Long-Sleeved Collared Shirt (buttons all the
way down, no polos), and Black Belt.
Black on bottom, black/dark collared shirt on top.
There were many questions last night with regard to our “business casual” label on the “What to Pack” form. As we mentioned during our question and answer portion of our meeting, we have no intention of micro-managing this element of our trip. We do ask that you consider the performances we will be participating in as well as the venues we will be entering as you plan your wardrobe for the trip. Jeans are not considered appropriate attire for a symphony concert, jazz performance, or Broadway musical. We ask that you use good judgment in your planning so we are appropriately dressed for each experience. Thank you for your cooperation!
Thank you everyone! Stay tuned for many NYC pictures and blog reports from The Big Apple!
