What To Bring & Wear To June/July Rehearsals
June and July is our opportunity to really focus on the basics as a band.  We will learn and reinforce marching fundamentals as well as fundamentals of musicianship through parade formations - skills we will utilize not only in our two parades and weekly marches to the stadium, but in our half-time show performances for the entire season.  Uniformity takes persistence - engagement, effort, and attention to detail from all of our members - June is an important time for us to begin to hone these skills.  We are looking forward to a great start to our 2014 season and to welcoming 30 new faces to our Marching Band organization!
We will be outside for the majority of our rehearsal time during our June and July rehearsals.  Dress in shorts and t-shirts or polo shirts that are school appropriate, yet comfortable (no short-shorts or spaghetti strap shirts) with sneakers (no Tom's, boots, sandals, etc.).  No need to clarify specifics - if you feel the need to clarify, be on the safe side and choose something else - just use good judgement.  We will be out in the sun for much of our time, so bring a water bottle to stay hydrated during rehearsals, wear sun-screen, and be sure to eat dinner prior to coming to rehearsal.  We will take breaks throughout our time together which will provide some much-needed rest, hydration, and social time.
We will be checking out marching band instruments to all of our new members on Monday 6/16 during our rehearsal time, so no need to bring an instrument the first day - but you should bring your instrument for our remaining rehearsal days.  We will issue paper copies of our traditional music at this time, our main focus for June & July, and will be uploading our 2014 Wizard of Oz halftime show music to our website upon its completion later this month.
Students will need to provide their own lyre and flip folder, our means of reading music while marching, either online, at Evanston Band and Orchestra, or at Quinlan and Fabish music stores.  Please be sure to purchase the specific lyre and flip folder that go with your instrument - simply tell your sales associate what you play and they can help you find what you need.

July 4th Parade
The Independence Day parade takes place along Central Street in Evanston between Bent Park and NU's football stadium.  Step-off begins at 2pm, however we will likely begin our portion of the parade closer to 2:30pm.  I will provide call-time information as we get closer to the parade, as details are still being worked out with the parade coordinators.  We will provide transportation from ETHS to and from the parade.  Attire for this event is a standard issue ETHS Marching Band t-shirt, ETHS Marching Band Cap, khaki shorts, and white sneakers.

Summer Mailer
We are finalizing the information for the 2014 summer mailer, which we aim to have in the mail this week.  We will be moving to an online payment and ordering system through the school web-store, which is an exciting and efficient change for this year.  Information on making payments will be included in our mailer - please stay tuned.  We will also email a digital copy of the mailer to this email list-serve and will post copies on our website.
We hope that you will consider volunteering to help our students and directors this season!  Marching Band is a wonderful endeavor for our students and we want to include you in this exciting time for your high school student.  Please consider volunteering to chaperone band camp, an NU outreach event, or a competition - or consider being a part of our field crew to help get our equipment on the field during games and competitions - or consider planning or being involved in our Pot Luck Dinner, Marengo Barbecue, or Marching Band Banquet!

We look forward to a wonderful 2014!  Make the most of your summer!

See you soon,
Matt Bufis and Mike Lehman
