Band Announcements Week of 2/23 - 2/27 2015

Good Afternoon Band Families,
A few updates for this week!

Cheesecake Order Delivery
For those of you who sold in the cheesecake fundraiser, the product is being delivered this Wednesday afternoon for pick-up after school. Remember, this is a frozen product and MUST be picked up on Wednesday: it must be kept frozen for customer delivery and we do not have a way of keeping it cold if it remains here at school!  Also, it would be great to have a couple of parent volunteers to help sort the cheesecake orders once they arrive at 1:30. If you are able to assist, I would be grateful. Please respond to this e-mail or phone my office - (847) 424-7853.

ETHS Solo & Ensemble Festival - Tuesday March 31st 4:00 - 9:00 p.m.
We are nearly one month away from the ETHS Solo and Ensemble Festival, hosted by our music department for our students.  This event is an opportunity for students to perform accompanied solos as well as duets, trios, and chamber pieces in front of a small audience and music evaluator for a rating and feedback.  We will host the instrumental performances in our band room from 4:00 - 9:00 p.m.  Please consider performing a solo or small group composition at this event!  Please coordinate with your small groups and accompanists so we can put a schedule together with ease.  A list of past accompanists is located on our website at:  http://www.ethsbands.com/faculty_staff/piano_accompanists.html
A digital version of our Solo & Ensemble Registration Form can be found at the link below.  Hard copies will be distributed in classes tomorrow!  All Registration Forms are due to Mr. Bufis by Friday March 6th so that a first draft of the schedule can be created.

Winter Music Festival Concert - Wednesday March 4th 2015 7:00 p.m.
As our concert approaches, we wanted to remind all of our athletes to communicate with their coaches about next week's performance, and their music teachers about their specific athletic tryouts.  Per our annual arrangement with the Athletic Department, all musicians are to be released from tryouts prior to their scheduled performance with enough time to change into concert attire.  All of our musician-athletes may return to tryouts promptly at the conclusion of their portion of the concert.  Tryouts are not an excused absence from a quarterly graded concert performance.  Please be prompt in your communication to your teachers and coaches so we can assist in the navigation of any obstacles.

As the concert approaches, we would like to ask that our band students and families spend a few minutes talking about concert etiquette prior to our community event.  Our expectation for our students is that they be supportive peer members and active listeners for the duration of the concert, with respect for each other as well as for the wonderful community of patrons who attend our annual event.  We have reinforced this expectation throughout our daily preparation this week for what will surely be an afternoon  of wonderful performances.  Thank you in advance for your support!

Equipment Recall
The music department, with the help of the ETHS Boosters, has purchased 30 chromatic tuner/metronome devices and about 10 each of trumpet/trombone straight, cup, and harmon mutes.  Many of these items have been misplaced in the shuffle of our year - through concerts, public performances, festivals, trips, etc.  Please help us to recover these missing items - they were a one-time purchase in an effort to provide necessary equipment to our program.  If you have any of these items, please return them as soon as possible so that we can continue to prepare for our upcoming events.

ETHS Jazz Festival Recap
On Saturday, February 14th, ETHS hosted 42 middle school and high school jazz groups from around the state at the 12th Annual Evanston Township High School Jazz Festival.  These groups performed for feedback from our panel of esteemed adjudicators.  The day also included clinics, mater classes, and lectures from world-class professional musicians and university professors.  The all-day event was punctuated by an incredible evening concert by The Jeff Hamilton Trio.  ETHS’s own Jazz Ensemble opened the evening concert with a hard-hitting set to energize the audience.  It was an incredible day of education and a great day of jazz music!  Congratulations to all of our student performers and a very special thank you to the many students and families who volunteered to make the day a resounding success!

Jazz Festival Congratulations

Good Evening ETHS Band Families-

I was fortunate to have an amazing Jazz Festival planning committee comprised of both veteran parents and parents new to ETHS.  These parents meticulously planned, organized, and manicured every detail for Saturday’s festival; ensuring the absolute best experience for our students and guests.  A huge thank you to our Jazz Festival Committee members!
In addition to our planning committee, we had over 100 ETHS music students helping out with set-up/tear-down, escorting visiting schools to the various rooms, video recording the performances, putting out the occasional proverbial “fire,” and everything in between!  Our student volunteers demonstrated maturity, responsibility, and a level of helpfulness that resonated with our guests and made the ETHS Jazz Festival a special event for everyone.  Our students represented themselves and ETHS in the best way—thank you!

Congratulations to all of our ETHS Jazz Bands and Combos on their performances, thank you to all our committee members, parent and student volunteers, and thank you for your continued support!

Band Announcements - Week of February 9 - 13

Good Morning Band Families,
It has been a while since we last communicated via email/blog, so here are some important updates for our families.  These announcements have been excerpted from our daily class announcements over the past couple of weeks.  We look forward to seeing everyone at our Jazz Festival and evening concert this weekend - featuring the ETHS Jazz Ensemble and our special guests, The Jeff Hamilton Trio!

Jazz Festival This Weekend - Saturday 2/14
This weekend, we welcome 42 high school jazz big bands and combos from over 20 schools to ETHS for the 12th Annual Evanston Township High School Jazz Festival.  Over 75 students from our own music department will be performing throughout the day - taking part in clinics and workshops and attending concerts featuring world-class musicians.  The entire event is free and open to the public -
we highly encourage all of our students to come to the festival to take part in the day for their own educational enjoyment, as well as to support their musical peers!  The evening concert features our own ETHS Jazz Ensemble and special guests The Jeff Hamilton Trio!  Tickets are on sale: $15 for students and senior citizens and $20 for general admission.  You can purchase tickets here:  ETHS Evening Concert Ticket Sales or at the  door on the night of the concert!  We look forward to seeing you there!

First Annual ETHS Fine Arts Week
The music faculty and students have designed our first annual ETHS Fine Arts week which has been taking place all week at ETHS.  The week is complete with visual arts displays and activities and music and theatre performances throughout the building and has been promoted daily through announcements over our school PA system each morning.  It is our intent to showcase the talents of our current Fine Arts students, attract new students to the Fine Arts wing, and foster a greater sense of awareness of the arts in our community.  We look forward to many additional developments!

Band Mentorship Program Has Begun!
At this point, all of our mentors and mentees should have had a chance to connect - either at our Mentorship Breakfast on Wednesday 1/28, or via text/email/social media - and have setup a good time to meet.  The expectation for our mentorship program is that our groups meet at least two times per month and record their meeting times on the chart in the band hallway.  If you have not had contact with your mentor/mentee, or have not received contact information as of today, please let us know so that we can help you to facilitate your initial communication.  This program provides such a wonderful opportunity for our mentors and our mentees - musically and socially!  We look forward to witnessing your interactions throughout the second semester.  For a complete listing of our most current mentor/mentee pairings, see the link below!

Mark Morette from Mark Custom Recordings Visits ETHS Next Week!
We are excited to welcome Mark Morette, owner of Mark Custom Recordings, to ETHS!  Mark will be leading lectures and recording sessions for all of our music students during a three day residency.  Each performing ensemble will be given an opportunity to perform and record using state of the art technology and recording techniques.  We will be given an opportunity to listen to the finished product and reflect upon our strengths and weaknesses as an ensemble, which will be greatly beneficial as we refine our music for our March concert and for the remainder of the school year.  For a full schedule of events and a bio of our Grammy Award nominated recording artist, please click the link below!

Wind Symphony New Trier/Carl Sandburg Concert Exchange
The ETHS Wind Symphony will be sharing a concert next month with the New Trier High School Symphonic Wind Ensemble and the Carl Sandburg High School Wind Ensemble.  We are looking forward to a great opportunity to make music together and work with Mr. James F. Keene - Director of Bands Emeritus from the University of Illinois.  A full schedule of events is being assembled in preparation for our afternoon and evening event at
New Trier on Friday March 20th.  Wind Symphony students will be working with Mr. Keene on Wednesday evening March 18th from 6:00 - 8:30 p.m. in our band room.  Please mark both of these dates on your calendar and clear all of your conflicts.  Mr. Keene is one of the last remaining conductors of his era - this will be a monumental and historic opportunity for ETHS!

Cheesecake Sale
Our annual cheesecake sale has begun!  We will be distributing samples during class today and will pass out all of the sales materials as well.  All orders are due to Mr. Bufis & Mr. Lehman by next Wednesday February 18th and the orders will arrive to ETHS later this month (TBA).
