http://www.eths.k12.il.us/parents/homeaccess.aspx

Please Note: This ALL BAND email list was generated from the 2014-2015 ETHS Band rosters through the Teacher Access Center (TAC) and Home Access Center (HAC), the grading and communication system used by ETHS.  If you would like to add a new email address for use during the school year, follow this link to update your information in Home Access Center (HAC) - this is the main communication tool for all ETHS faculty members during the academic year:

Good Afternoon ETHS Band Students and Families!
To all of our returning band members – welcome back! – and to all of our new band students – welcome to our band family!  We are really looking forward to another great year in ETHS Bands!  We have a lot of exciting events and opportunities planned for you and are anxious to get our school year off to a great start.  Please see below for a few beginning logistical announcements.  We look forward to seeing you at
Music Parent Night this Tuesday September 2nd at 7:00 p.m. in the auditorium!

BAND SCHEDULE FOR MARKING QUARTER 1

End of Week 1:  We have officially completed the clerical and administrative logistics of getting our 200-member band program up and running.  All students should have band lockers and lock combinations, school-owned instruments (if needed), warm-up music and folders, and a copy of the band handbook (Signed Contract Was Due Today).  No instruments were needed during the first few days, but you will need them from now on.  Please make arrangements to bring your instrument back and forth to school on a daily basis – effective this Tuesday September 2nd - so you can practice at home and rehearse at school during band class.  Please see below as a reminder for your band period assignment for the first marking quarter.  You are to report to this class period from Day 2 of school through the end of the first marking quarter (late October).

All Marching Band Members – Report to Band Period 6

All Non-Marching Freshmen – Report to Band Period 4

All Non-Marching Sophomores, Juniors & Seniors – Report to Band Period 5

BAND PROGRAM LOGISTICS

Band Program Information
As a band department, we are committed to communicating our expectations, policies, schedules, and successes with our students, band families, and community at large on a regular basis.  We do this in several ways:

Emails Through HAC
Our school uses an online grading and communication software called “Home Access Center” as a primary line of communication with parents and students.  We will often generate class emails that are based on the email addresses you have linked in the HAC interface.  To add, edit, or update an email address in HAC, simply visit
http://www.eths.k12.il.us/parents/homeaccess.aspx

Band Website: www.ethsbands.com
Our website contains many descriptions, schedules, and explanations of everything that is happening in our program on a regular basis within the “Curriculum” tab.  Our “Calendar” tab provides an up-to-date Google Calendar of all of our band events, rehearsals, trips, and activities that can be linked with your phones, tablets, and computers for your convenience.  The “Blog” tab includes a record of every band program email we have sent throughout the year, should you need to reference any announcements.  The “Materials” tab includes student resources such as assignments, rehearsal recordings, professional reference recordings, sheet music, and handouts.  Our “Faculty & Staff” tab lists the bios and contact information for our directors, adjunct staff, and private lesson students.  Lastly, our “Spring Tour” tab serves as a resource for all materials relating to our biennial tours including fund raising information, permission forms, rooming lists, and photos from our trip.

Band Handbook
We sent home a copy of this great resource manual during the first days of school for your review and signature.  This handbook can also be found on our webpage in digital format.

Class Announcements
We will communicate with our students in three additional ways:  1) Daily, we will provide verbal announcements to our students at the start of class.  2) We will post announcements on the large dry-erase board in the band hallway on a regular basis.  3) We will, at times, provide written announcements and assignments to students in class.

Required Materials
We ask that you check your instruments and cases this weekend to make sure that everything is working properly on your instruments and that you have all of your necessary supplies for class.  See below for the materials excerpted from our Band Handbook:

Flutes: Cleaning/Tuning Rod and a polishing cloth
Oboes/Bassoon: Two good medium cane reeds, a small prescription/ pill bottle (to soak reeds), and an instrument swab.

Events In The Near Future

Music Parent Night – Tuesday September 2nd, 2014 at 7:00 p.m.
On Tuesday September 2nd, we will host our annual Music Parent Night in the ETHS auditorium and surrounding music classrooms throughout our Fine Arts Wing.  The event will begin at 7:00 p.m. and will include a general assembly for all music parents with comments from our department chair, the scheduling and counseling department, and the ETHS Booster organization.  We will then proceed to our various rehearsal rooms for some band/orchestra/choir/jazz specific conversations.  This is an important meeting for all new and returning parents/guardians of ETHS music students, so please plan to attend – even if you have already done so in the past.

Boosterpalooza – Saturday September 6th, 2014 6:30 – 10:00 p.m.
Please come to the 2014 BOOSTER PALOOZA Saturday, September 6!  The ETHS Booster club supports
all extracurricular activities at the high school -- music, fine arts, and after-school clubs, in addition to sports. This event is the primary fundraiser this year to help provide these important programs for students.

Join us September 6 for a lively party on the rooftop of Sherman Plaza Parking, 821 Davis St. from 6:30-10 pm. There will be live bands, food from Evanston’s finest restaurants, and a raffle – all served up with the best view of the city. We are looking forward to a fun party and a big turnout!  Here are more details and the link to register --

ILMEA Auditions – ETHS Bands ILMEA Registration Deadline is Friday September 12th

We highly encourage our students to audition for ILMEA!  Our own ETHS Bands auditions for Wind Symphony and Symphonic Band are made up of excerpts from the ILMEA auditions in an effort to give our students a competitive edge.  For more information on ILMEA, and the ETHS process for participating in ILMEA, please read below:

The Illinois Music Educators Association (ILMEA) is Illinois' professional organization for music educators. This organization promotes, cultivates, and guides public school music education in the state of Illinois through professional development for teachers and elite performance experiences for students.

Each fall, the 9 ILMEA districts in Illinois host auditions during the month of October to determine acceptance into district level honor bands, orchestras, choirs, jazz choirs, jazz bands, and jazz combos. These auditions also serve as the determining gateway for inclusion in the annual All-State performing ensembles, who rehearse and perform during the annual ILMEA Conference held in Peoria each January.

In the District 7 ILMEA region, of which ETHS is a participating school, there is a limit of 16 student auditioners per discipline (winds and percussion, jazz, choir, vocal jazz, choir). As a school, we often have more than 16 students per discipline who are interested in auditioning at the district level. Because of this, our department must first determine student interest and administer an internal audition process in advance of the ILMEA District 7 audition entry deadline. If you are interested in auditioning for ILMEA, please fill out the ETHS ILMEA Band/Jazz Audition Interest Form at the link below.

We at ETHS Bands are happy to welcome everyone back to school.  We hope that each of you had a great summer and we look forward to working with you again this school year.  Let’s make this a year to remember!

Sincerely,

Audition results will be posted on Friday, September 5th at the end of the school day.

This meeting is a necessary component for providing you with all of the information needed for the year.  Attendance from all our jazz students and at least one parent/guardian will be crucial for a successful year.
