Good Afternoon Wildkit Marching Band Families!
I hope this email finds you enjoying a great holiday weekend - what perfect weather!  The temperature for Monday looks ideal for a parade - partly sunny and 79 degrees.  I am sure the event will be well attended and we are surely poised for a great first performance of 2016.
I want to begin by congratulating our new marchers who have joined us throughout June in preparation for the parade.  They have done a fabulous job of acclimating to our group and I am very pleased with their progress.  I would also like to thank our student leaders for being so welcoming and helpful to our new members - I can already tell this is going to be a memorable season for our program.  Lastly, I want to extend a special thanks to our staff: Peggy Sue Casey for her help with our percussion section, Bernita Robey - our new Color Guard instructor who has proven to be full of great energy and expertise, Lorenzo Medrano who is writing our guard work this year and paid us a visit at rehearsal, Mitch Rogers who is writing our drill this year for the third time, and my good friend and colleague Mike Lehman for his help in getting us ready for the July 4th parade.

July 4th Final Reminders:
Please drink plenty of water and eat breakfast and lunch prior to the parade on Monday - while the weather is ideal, we will be engaging in a physical activity.  Please also be sure to put on sunscreen!  We will be meeting at school at 11:30, loading buses (instruments/music only, no cases), and departing for the parade.  If you live near BENT PARK or RYAN FIELD and would like to meet us at the event, or depart from the event without using ETHS transportation, email me at bufism@eths.k12.il.us right away!  If you would like to volunteer to walk alongside the band during the parade to provide water, you can either meet us at Bent Park or ride the bus over with the band.  Returning marchers - if you lost your shirt, bring $10 to school on Monday and we will provide you with a new shirt.  All new marchers who have attended June rehearsals should have received a shirt and cap at rehearsals this week.  Lastly, students who will be picked up at school after the parade will need to be picked up at the summer construction entrance of the building - 25A - at the rear of the school.  Campus Safety will be present to wait with students until their rides arrive.
As a reminder, it's not too late to make improvements to your performance on Monday!  Practicing for 20 minutes today and tomorrow - and even memorizing or partially memorizing your music - will make a great impact on your personal performance and contribution to the group's performance.

Good Luck At SuperState

Good Afternoon ETHS Band Families,
Tomorrow afternoon, the ETHS Wind Symphony will be performing at the University of Illinois SuperState Concert Band Festival - the most prestigious band festival in the state and one of the finest in the country.  Please consider tuning in at 4:30 p.m. - the event will be live-streamed at
http://banddirector.com/   Wind Symphony students are reminded to arrive at 10:00 a.m. sharp to load the buses and depart.  Students will need their concert attire, a sack lunch for the bus, and $15 for dinner along with their instruments and music.  It will be a terrific day and a great experience for all.  Read more about SuperState below, as well as at bands.illinois.edu

About Illinois SuperState
Started by former Director of Bands Dr. Harry Begian, the University of Illinois Superstate Concert Band Festival is designed to bring the finest middle and high school bands to the Urbana-Champaign campus for two days of music making.  While designed to be a non-competitive event in nature, the festival requires the submission of 12 minutes of recorded music in the form of mp3 files to be pre-screened and evaluated by a panel of adjudicators from across the country.  Through this blind, refereed submission process, the top bands from each category are invited to campus to perform at this prestigious festival.  At the end of the festival, the best band from each performing division is designated “Honor Band,” a privilege that automatically qualifies the group for performance at the festival the following year without having to submit another recording.  This festival is famous for the extremely high quality of literature selected, and the high performance accuracy and expressivity demonstrated by the bands who take the stage.

About Foellinger Great Hall @ The Krannert Center
The Foellinger Great Hall is Krannert Center’s largest theater with a seating capacity of 2,078 people on its main floor, balcony, and choral balcony levels.  The carpeting outside and inside this theater, as well as the seats, are beige in color, giving a light and airy feel to this expansive performance space.  The Great Hall is reserved primarily for the presentation of vocal and instrumental music, from small ensembles to large orchestras and choruses, because of its world-renowned acoustical perfection.  There are several factors that contribute to the Great Hall’s fine acoustics.  The room is almost perfectly symmetrical.  Mrs. Krannert made it clear to Max Abramivitz, that she disliked the appearance of traditional acoustic clouds on the ceilings of most performance spaces.  Since his firm did not specialize in acoustics, Abramavitz hired Dr. C. Cyral Harris to assist with the acoustical design of the Great Hall’s interior space.  Dr. Harris used a computer to help design the ceiling, a pretty advanced task in the early 1960s.  The ceiling is made from plaster and is suspended from the true ceiling of the room by heavy-duty springs.

The seats in the Foellinger Great Hall also contribute to the hall’s fine acoustics.  The fabric and foam used in the seats is designed to absorb equal amounts of sound whether occupied or not.  The foam in the seats is less dense in areas where the sound is most live, and more dense in areas where the sound is most dead, in order to help reflect the sound better.  The Great Hall was designed without any parallel surfaces.  All of the surfaces are angled, so that sound will never become trapped but always reflect into the audience.
At the back and above the stage, a mechanized temporary wall can be raised or lowered to reveal as few as two rows or up to five rows of choral balcony seats.  The balcony is used for the choral ensemble in music programs that require full orchestra with large chorus.  It is also used to seat patrons who wish to see the front of the conductor or as additional seating for popular performances.  The Foellinger Great Hall stage floor, house floor, and stage risers are made of white oak.  Because the area under the stage floor is hollow, many musicians claim that when performing with a large group they can feel tones resonating from the stage.  Specially designed ambient lighting reduces glare for the performers on stage.  Microphones frequently hang over the stage for purposes of recording.  In fact, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra regularly recorded in the Foellinger Great Hall until its own new facilities of the early 1990s made it possible for them to record in their own performance home.

Let's make it a great day to be a Wildkit!

Sincerely,
Mr. Bufis

ETHS Bands Post-Spring Break Announcements 2016

Hello ETHS Band Students and Families!
We have a number of important announcements as we jump into our post-break 4th quarter.  Please read below!

ETHS Wind Symphony Makes Super State!

It is with great pride that we announce the acceptance of the ETHS Wind Symphony to the prestigious Illinois SuperState Concert Band Festival.  Held at the Krannert Center for the Performing Arts in Champaign-Urbana on May 7th, the Wind Symphony will perform on the home stage of the U of I Fine Arts programs, the same stage that was once used by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra to record several albums.  Our band was chosen as one of nine in the "Class AAAA" category by an anonymous refereed submission process made up of a panel of college band directors from across the country.  They will perform for several distinguished evaluators from major universities and service bands in front of an audience of their musical peers.  This marks the SECOND EVER performance for Evanston Township at this event, placing them alongside the very best high school bands from throughout the state.

More information on Illinois Super State can be found here - updates will be frequent over the next several weeks:
http://bands.illinois.edu/content/illinois-superstate-concert-band-festival
We will be traveling to U of I by bus on Saturday May 7th.  If you are interested in chaperoning, or if any other ETHS Band members would like to travel with us to Champaign to witness this event, please contact Mr. Bufis via email.  The event will also be broadcast live on the web via the U of I Bands webpage.  A link will be made available as we get closer to the event.

ETHS Jazz Festival - Jazz Band Announcements

Good Afternoon Jazz Band-

It's time for our annual Jazz Festival!  It's going to be an exciting week for the ETHS Jazz program.  See below for all of the information.

13th Annual ETHS Jazz Festival
Whew… after a year of planning, we are finally here!
This is an awesome event for our students, community, and nearly 1000 visitors throughout the day!  It is truly an “all hands on deck” event:  Students have been assigned a 60-90 minute time to work (that doesn’t conflict with their performance time(s)) and they will receive that info early next week.  Please make sure to arrive promptly to your work assignment and put your best foot forward—our student workers are always an awesome reflection on the program to our guests!  Additionally, there have been a couple emails from our parent coordinator, Diane Lequar, about opportunities to help.  If you have not yet signed up for a spot, please consider sharing 60-90 minutes of your time to help the festival run smoother and more efficiently.  The link to the sign up form can be found here:
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1rLAupVtnDEQT9pHPS7SzR1G5GQmgq2y7i2RMV7tBw8c/edit
Thank you in advance for your help!

Tickets for the evening concert:
Our festival will be punctuated by a concert by tenor saxophone virtuoso, Donny McCaslin! (woo hoo!!).  He’ll be joined by all-star Chicago musicians: Jim Trompeter (piano), Andrew Vogt (Bass), and Xavier Breaker (drums). The concert begins at 7:00pm in the ETHS Main Auditorium.  The Jazz Ensemble will play an opening set (with some new tunes!), including a tune of Donny’s.  This is a ticketed event and all proceeds go right back into the ETHS Jazz Program.  We have purchased tickets for each student to attend the show.  Plan to sit as a group for the duration of the show, right in front!  For ticket info, visit:
https://www.showclix.com/event/eths-2016-jazz-festival  Parents, friends, and groupies, hope to see you there, this should be awesome!

Color Guard Follow Up

Dear Color Guard Members and Families,
Thank you for attending last night's meeting.  I am very appreciative of your enthusiasm and passion for the guard program at ETHS and look forward to the fall season.  As mentioned last night, I am currently searching for a new coach - both internally at ETHS and externally in the WGI and DCI circuits as well as in my circle of colleagues.  As I have any new information about our vacancy, I will follow up with you.  It is my intention to be as transparent as possible and communicate a clear process for building this program to its full potential.
Here is where I need your help:

1)
Freshmen Activities Fair (Beardsley Gym, Wednesday 2/24 from 6:00 - 7:30 p.m.) - I have reserved a table for the Color Guard to be represented at our annual Freshmen Activities Fair.  This is actually a very viable recruitment venue - several of you are in Guard now because of this event.  I am requesting that we have some student representation at this event, along with a parent chaperone (I will be on the D.C. Trip with the band).  We need to provide an inviting display at our table that shows students what color guard is and provides them with information.  I would like student input in designing an informational flyer to be passed out to students who walk by the table.  I can provide the copies of this finished flyer along with an interest sheet where students write down their contact information for us to follow up with them prior to tryouts in May.  I can also provide a TV and color guard video that loops throughout the evening to draw students in.  If you are interested in helping out with this, please stop by the office next week or send me an email - this is coming up quickly!

2)
Email Blast To Current 8th Grade Band Students - I would like to send a separate email blast to all current D65 8th Grade Band students telling them about our Color Guard program and prompting them to try out for the group in May.  This list of students will include 8th Graders who have already signed up for the ETHS Band as well as students who decided not to continue - for these students, Color Guard could be an opportunity for them to continue with music without playing an instrument.  If you are interested in helping with this, please email me or stop by the office next week!  I will send this information out prior to our Marching Band Information Night in early March.

3)
Potential Mini Guard Camp Summer 2016 - I need your input in creating a mini guard camp this summer in preparation for our Band Camp.  An amount of time that is an appropriate setup for our week away as a full band, but isn't asking too much of our Color Guard students.  To give you some background, most of the groups I work with outside of ETHS have some of their show routine learned prior to joining the band at Band Camp.  Routines are an added component to drill that are pretty complex, much like the added drum cadence requirements put on our Drum Line, and therefore need some added time to come together.  In addition, our new members will need some basic conditioning and prerequisite knowledge in order to keep up in our intense week away.  I would like some input from returning members so that I can get some dates on the calendar while we are still several months away.  Please email me or stop by the office to provide some input.

Thank you again for all of your efforts, enthusiasm, and support as we transition into another season.  I know that there is some uncertainty as we look at the road ahead, but I am confident that our returning students will continue to rise to the occasion as we plan for the fall and welcome in a new coach for our group.

Returning Marcher Meeting Recap - 2016

Good Morning 2015 Marching Band Students And Families,
Last night, we had our first annual "Returning Marcher" meeting.  It afforded us the opportunity to celebrate the success we have had over the last few years, view the new uniforms we have designed with community input, and take some time to look at some areas for improvement and set goals for the future.  As returning members, each of us moves into more of a leadership role by becoming upperclassmen - and therefore each of us has the ability and influence to help the group continue on its progressive trajectory.  I encourage each of the parents and students of returning marchers to view the attached PowerPoint slides from last night's meeting.  We are really looking forward to building on our success and reaching new heights this fall.
For those of you who did not attend, I want to call your attention to a few main points from last night's meeting - areas of attention as we move into next season.

George Williams College Tuition Increase - the cost to attend GWC Band Camp this fall has increased by $5,000, which translates to roughly $50 per student - twice the usual increase for our families.  We need to come up with a plan over the next two months as to how we move forward - either increasing our donations for student scholarships, or finding another venue for our annual band camp (Please read the attachment for more specifics).  If you are interested in making a donation to support our scholarship program, please contact me directly at bufism@eths.k12.il.us - Also,  I am asking for a panel of parent volunteers who can help us find some alternative band camp sites for this summer to keep our options open.

ETHS Wildkit Marching Band Festival (Potentially Hosting Fall 2017) - We would like to create an annual marching band festival for bands like us - who are mildly competitive, or even non-competitive.  There is a void for festivals of this kind in Illinois and we have determined that there is some interest to attend such an event from some of the schools in our area.  This would provide our program an opportunity to host a great event and provide a feature performance at the end of the evening, but also has the potential to raise $10,000-$15,000 once it gets traction - solving our student scholarship revenue problem for our entire band program.  I am looking to form a steering committee who can help me research the mechanics of putting on a festival at ETHS with the intention of launching our first event in the fall of 2017.

Uniform Fitting/Care/Maintenance - We are in need of some dedicated parents to assist Ms. Bean and Mrs. Bouxsein in the fitting and care for our new uniforms.  These dedicated parents have done a fine job for us for quite some time, but the time has come to begin to train the next generation of parents to continue their legacy.  If you are willing/able to help out in any capacity, please email Bonnie Bean: cddbsb@sbcglobal.net
and Cathy Bouxsein: catherine-bouxsein@comcast.net
Your help is both needed and greatly appreciated!
Room For Improvement - Please look through the Powerpoint for more information regarding attendance protocol, tardies, rehearsal efficiency, student leadership, and several other important topics.  As returning members and families, you can help do your part in solidifying a culture of excellence in the Wildkit Marching Band Program.

Thank you so much for your time - we are really excited for the 2016 season!  I am confident this will be the best season yet!  We look forward to seeing you at Marching Band Information Night where we will reveal the 2016 Halftime Show Theme (Thursday March 3rd 7:00 p.m. in ETHS Band Room).

Updated Itinerary 02/03/2016
The major change that you will notice is that the Kennedy Center performance has been removed from our tour.  The Wind Symphony was selected to perform at the Kennedy Center based on performance recordings, programs, and videos reviewed by a committee - however our performance day was bumped to Monday evening February 29th, the day we are scheduled to return to ETHS.  Our original plans were impacted by the contract mechanics that pair non-professional performance groups, like our ETHS Wind Symphony, with professional groups and the details involving coordinating or permitting an opening act like ours.  We were alerted to this change the week before Winter Break and carefully weighed our options: the expenses of adding an extra day to our tour or sliding the tour back by one day - both financially and academically.  We ultimately determined that the best decision was to abandon this performance for another opportunity, and we are excited to announce a few exciting events that will come out of this initial misfortune.
You will now notice that the Wind Symphony will have a clinic with Ms. Mary Poling, professional oboist and conductor of the Baltimore Symphony Youth Orchestra, while on tour, and that the entire tour group will get to attend a concert with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra - performing Elgar's
Enigma Variations.  In addition, our travel agent will be forwarding the funds we invested in the Kennedy Center performance experience to Northwestern University's Pick Staiger Concert Hall so that our Wind Symphony can share a concert with the Warren Township High School Wind Symphony.  As directors we feel that it is unfortunate that our students will not have the chance to perform in our intended venue, but are pleased with the new opportunities we were able to coordinate for our students with the help of our travel agent.

Wind Symphony Schedule
A calendar of rehearsals and events was distributed in class on Monday outlining our strategic plan to prepare for our upcoming concerts (DC Tour, March 8th ETHS Music Festival Concert, March 18th Lake Zurich WS Exchange) and professional recording experience.  These are special opportunities that will require the efforts of our full group for a successful outcome.  Please mark these events on your calendar and continue to practice your music outside of class.
ETHS Solo & Ensemble Festival - Tuesday March 22nd, 2016 4:00 - 9:00 p.m.
We want to take this opportunity to put a plug in about our Solo and Ensemble Festival, hosted here at ETHS.  This event is an opportunity for students to perform accompanied solos as well as duets, trios, and chamber pieces in front of a small audience and music evaluator for a rating and feedback.  We will host the instrumental performances in our band room from 4:00 - 9:00 p.m.  Please consider performing a solo or small group composition at this event!  Please coordinate with your small groups and accompanists so we can put a schedule together with ease.  A list of past accompanists is located on our website at:

 http://www.ethsbands.com/faculty_staff/piano_accompanists.html

A solo and ensemble registration form will be available later this month on our webpage, and will be emailed out as well.  Please plan with your band directors, private lesson teachers, and peers to form small ensembles and pick literature for this event.
Honors Credit Update & Semester 2 Honors Credit Program
We have submitted a list of changes to the scheduling department for Semester 1, which will go into effect retroactively.  Since this is the first time we have gone through the Honors Credit process in this way - both teachers and students - we were more lenient with students about submission deadlines and material development, and needed a longer period of time to process applications.  Second semester will be a shorter timeline and will need to be more stringent to accommodate the last day for seniors as well as summer recess.  Please plan to submit your materials for Semester 2 by May 1st.  In order to streamline this process from a paperwork standpoint, we have modified the Scholarly & Service Projects forms by merging them into 1 submission document.  The Semester 2 "Performance Points" and "Scholarly & Service Projects" forms can be found on our webpage:

ETHS Jazz Festival - Saturday February 20th
Established in 2004 as a non-competitive, all-day jazz immersion event, the Evanston Township High School Jazz Festival hosts nearly 50 middle and high school jazz groups from around the region.  Students of all levels are inspired by professional musicians, enlightened by our clinics, lectures, and master classes, and encouraged to take their playing to the next level.  This educational and cultural jazz festival has earned its distinction by providing the opportunity to showcase local, national, and international artists.
We are thrilled to feature virtuoso tenor saxophonist, Donny McCaslin at our evening concert! The evening begins at 7:00 p.m. in the ETHS main auditorium with a set from ETHS’s own Jazz Ensemble under the direction of Mike Lehman, followed by an evening of great music from Donny McCaslin. Tickets are $20 for adults; $15 for children, students with I.D., and seniors. All seats are reserved. All proceeds from tickets sales go toward enhancing the Jazz program at ETHS and will provide more fantastic music opportunities to ETHS students. For tickets, please visit www.ethsjazz.com

Have a great weekend - and Go Kits!

ETHS Marching Band Information Night 2016!

Good Afternoon Band Families!
On behalf of the ETHS Wildkit Marching Band, it is with great excitement that I invite you to two important Marching Band meetings that will help shape our 2016 season.  Our first meeting, for all returning marchers and families, will take place next Thursday February 11th, at 7:00 p.m. in the ETHS Band Room.  We will be recapping our 2015 season, revealing our new uniform design, discussing band camp at GWC, detailing the student leadership application process, and organizing efforts to host our own ETHS Marching Band Festival in the fall of 2017.  It will be an exciting and important meeting for our returning marching band members and families, so I encourage each of you to attend.  I also hope to spend a few minutes at the end of the meeting speaking with our Color Guard students and families - recapping the last two seasons and making plans for a great spring recruitment process.
The second meeting is our annual Marching Band Information Night - an important recruitment experience for our band.
Marching Band information night, for all new marchers and families (returning marchers welcome), will take place on Thursday March 3rd at 7:00 p.m. in the ETHS Band Room.  We welcome all 8th grade students and their parents/guardians to ETHS, but also encourage all of our current band students who have never marched before to attend.  It seems like every year, we get more and more upperclassmen band members to give marching band a try as sophomores, juniors, and seniors - it is never too late to join!  In addition, we anticipate another huge incoming freshmen class this fall and can't wait to fill the field with a bigger band!  Returning members will be given an opportunity to speak with our new marchers as an instrument section at this meeting - it's a great way to welcome new members to our marching band family.  Plus, our 2016 Halftime Show theme will be revealed.....it's going to be a great one!

See Below for more information!  We look forward to seeing you soon!
